Thinking About Trying Jiujitsu? Here’s What Every Beginner Should Know

By Professor Sachprakash, Jiujitsu Dharma Academy at Darruma

So… you’ve been thinking about trying Jiujitsu (BJJ). Maybe you’ve seen some videos online, heard about it from a friend, or just want a new way to get in shape and challenge yourself. Whatever brought you here—welcome. Starting Jiujitsu can feel a little intimidating at first, but it might just be the best decision you make for your body, mind, and confidence.

At Jiujitsu Dharma by Daruma, we specialize in helping beginners feel at home on the mat. If you’re curious but not sure what to expect, this guide is for you.

First Things First: What Is Jiujitsu?

Jiujitsu is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground control. Unlike striking-based arts like boxing or karate, Jiujitsu teaches you how to use leverage, technique, and timing to control or submit an opponent—regardless of size or strength.

  • ✅ It's beginner-friendly

  • ✅ It builds real-life self-defense skills

  • ✅ It’s an amazing workout (without being boring!)

  • ✅ And it sharpens your mind as much as your body

“But I’m Not in Shape…” (That’s Totally Okay)

Here’s something we hear a lot: “I want to get in shape before I try Jiujitsu.” Truth is, Jiujitsu is how many people get in shape. You don’t need to be flexible, strong, or athletic to start—just willing to learn and have fun.

Over time, your strength, flexibility, and cardio will improve naturally just by showing up and training consistently.

What to Expect in Your First Class

Your first class at Jiujitsu Dharma will be relaxed, supportive, and beginner-friendly. You won’t be thrown into sparring or expected to know anything. Here’s how a typical beginner class goes:

  • Warm-up: Simple drills to get your body moving and introduce Jiujitsu movements (no intense cardio here)

  • Technique: The instructor will walk you through a basic move step-by-step

  • Partner Drills: You’ll work with another beginner or more experienced partner to try out the move

  • Cool down & Questions: We always make time to stretch and talk through anything that came up in class

No pressure. No judgment. Just progress.

What Should You Wear?

If you’re trying a Gi class, we’ll lend you one to start. If it’s a no-Gi class, just wear:

  • Comfortable athletic wear (leggings, shorts, rash guard, or t-shirt)

  • No zippers, buttons, or jewelry

  • Flip-flops for off-mat walking (you’ll train barefoot)

Why Adults Fall in Love with JiuJitsu

It’s not just kids who benefit from martial arts. Adults—especially beginners—discover a ton of unexpected perks from Jiujitsu:

  • 🧠 Mental clarity: Training helps you tune out distractions and live in the moment

  • 💪 Strength and endurance: Full-body movement builds lean muscle and boosts cardio

  • 😌 Stress relief: There’s nothing like grappling to help you let go of daily stress

  • 🤝 New friendships: The Jiujitsu community is one of the most supportive you’ll find

Tips for Your First 30 Days

  • Be consistent (2–3x per week is ideal)

  • Ask questions—everyone was a beginner once

  • Focus on learning, not winning

  • Celebrate small wins (like showing up or surviving a tough roll)

Final Thoughts: You Belong on the Mat

Starting something new is always a little scary—but it’s also where the magic happens. Jiujitsu isn’t just about self-defense or exercise—it’s about becoming stronger, more confident, and more connected to yourself and your community.

At Jiujitsu Dharma by Daruma, we make it easy for beginners to take that first step. You don’t need to be in shape, experienced, or fearless. You just need to be willing to show up.

Ready to try your first class? We’ll meet you on the mat.
